People often complain that they easily lose motivation or that they get easily distracted. The truth is, they have issues staying focused. Since this is an important issue many people don’t know how to deal with, we decided to provide you with 10 proven tips on how to keep and improve your focus. Happy reading!
1. Make a goal list
Making a list of goals is a very subjective thing to do. Everyone does it differently. I’ve been writing down what I want to finish during my day every morning for about a year now. I try not to complicate things. Every morning, after I come back from my workout and wash, I sit down with a pen and paper and write down in a bullet-point form what I want to finish during the day. Others like to keep it digital and others write their plan in the evening of the previous day.
Like I said, it is very subjective, but the important thing is that it helps you in multiple very crucial ways. It shows you your priorities for the day and thus keeps you focused on the little things, which are the most important ones as they help you create your healthy habits. If you’d like to know why are habits so important, take a look at our post “Habits 101”, where we talk about the way habits form who you are. Further, finishing your goals and crossing them out from the list is the best and a very motivating feeling that will also provide you with a little reward of satisfaction everytime you finish your task.
2. Write down the “WHY”
In order to stay focused on your goals, which is by the way necessary to reach them, you need to constantly remind yourself about the “why”. Why do you want to achieve what you want to achieve? Why is it so important for you that you want to devote your time to it? You can also mention why you decided to not trade your time for relaxation or for games. Why is your goal more important than all your distractions? What this will do is the necessary little push that will help you to keep your mind on the price, as anytime you think of a distraction, you can remind yourself why it is a bad idea to trade your time for that distraction by reading your notes regarding your goals. Additionally, it will help you stay motivated as every time you look at your why you will realise how important it is for you.
3. Make small steps every day
Making baby-steps on a daily basis is the fundamental process every successful person went through. If you plan out your way into smaller steps, which you can divide into daily goals, your tasks will seem much more specific and you won’t have issues progressing. Maybe slowly, but surely. In addition, as I mentioned above, making small steps every day will lead to a habit creation, which is a crucial process on the way to your success. For more about this topic, take a look at “Habits 101”.
4. Make sticky notes with your goals and stick them around your place
Similarly to the first point, reminding yourself constantly about your desired direction is very important. A very useful tool to keep yourself focused is making a bunch of stickies and putting them up on the furniture around your room. It does make a difference to wake up every morning seeing all of those messages to yourself saying why you shouldn’t give up on your plans. Doing this will constantly remind you about your aims and will make it easier for you to stick to them.
5. Look for like-minded people to walk the way with you
Probably one of the greatest tips there is regarding keeping your focus unbreakable is to look for like-minded people who have similar desires and goals as you do. This will not only keep you motivated to not stay behind, but it will also allow you to learn from your friends and to cooperate with them in case it might get the both of you closer to your goals. The symbiosis among like-minded people is indeed indescribably beneficial. You can start you search on social sites such as Quora. If you’re interested what Quora is or how to use it, take a look at our QUORA článek – post, where we explain everything you need to know.
6. Review your goals at the end of the day before going to sleep
Keeping your goals in line with your progress might sometimes be a little bit tricky. This means that daily review of your goals might help you a great deal. It will save you a lot of time thinking about what to do to get closer to your final destination on the way. It will also help you memorizing your goals, which isn’t a necessity, but will allow for a greater creativity and productivity when dealing with challenges or when having a hard time fighting your distractions. To learn more about this method of using your imagination to create multiple future streams of reality in your mind, read our post “Imagination and productivity – How to win any argument and become more confident” where you will find one of the best methods that helps people to deal with predictable and unpredictable hardships before they even occur.
One of the best investors and mentors, Warren Buffet, once asked his pupil to make a list of the top 25 things he wants to achieve in his life, highlight the top 5 and erase the rest. The purpose of this exercise was obviously to prioritize and to keep the pupil’s focus on the top 5. Prioritization will keep you away from the less important things you give less value to. It will make things crystal clear so that you can happily focus on your top priorities.
8. Get rid of distractions
As an extension to the previous tip, you should also strive to get rid of your distractions. This doesn’t mean that you should throw out or sell all your devices and sell your Netflix subscription (which I would highly recommend), but you should at least distance yourself from these things when working, so then you wouldn’t get easily mislead by them and wouldn’t end up procrastinating instead of focusing on the things you passionately wrote down in the morning.
9. Have a vague long-term aim, but also more short-term goals
Having a long-term aim or a direction you want to head in is very important. You don’t need to be completely sure about where you are heading, but you should at least keep a more general destination in your head in order to keep yourself on-track and to be able to choose more specific short-term goals, which will direct you along the way. The more precise you can narrow down your short-term goals, the more precise your progress will be and the stronger you’ll end up being at the end of the day.
10. And most importantly, mind your own business
Probably the most important thing that will help you to stay focused on your goals and to keep a stable progress is to mind your own business rather than working on other people’s goals (Kiyosaki)RDPD affiliate. It is fine to work for other people, as long as your own goals are being accounted for along the way. However, if you’re reading this and you’re working somewhere for someone you don’t even know and you have no time and no energy for your own desires, you need to reconsider your decisions. We get to live only once and we should have the privilege of choosing what to focus on as well as what not to focus on. The only way you can reach your own destination is to mind your own business. Don’t let others dictate you what’s good and what’s bad. Have your own ideology and decide what’s worth your focus and what’s not.
