Become the boss of your life with Timothy Ferris
Meet a superman of this world. He is an amazing author, inspiring philosopher, broadly respected personal mentor for a lot of lifelong learners, perhaps the best meta-learner of all times, successful businessman, great public speaker and maybe most importantly – a very healthy guy. These are the top quotes of his, at least according to our humble view. If you know about some of his quotes that are even more magical, please, feel free to share it with us and our beautiful and growing community!
Now let’s take a look at his amazing ideas…
“People will choose unhappiness over uncertainty.”
Do you really want to be “save” and sacrifice your happiness by taking a risk and having the chance and hope to achieve something you actually dream of? Safe jobs are not safe for you anymore. Standing still and waiting for a miracle is the biggest risk you can take. Sounds crazy, but it is all about your perspective. The angle of your perception is immensely powerful. Try to adjust your mindset and do something you perceive as risky while still moving somewhere…
“You are the average of the five people you associate with most, so do not underestimate the effects of your pessimistic, unambitious, or disorganized friends. If someone isn’t making you stronger, they’re making you weaker.”
Your environment affects you more than you think. It turns out that we do naturally behave like the people we do surround ourselves with. Be very careful about letting people get close to you. You should be able to analyse which of your friends are toxic for you. Those who are still complaining, negatively oriented and are not willing to grow, are basically undermining your healthy mentality to be better… Don’t let them influence you in this way. Find your own mentors to show you the right way, experts that are already where you want to be and peers that will be next to you on your path sharing the same values and goals.
“If you are insecure, guess what? The rest of the world is, too. Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.”
This is so true. The fact is that we naturally tend to underestimate ourselves. Perhaps owing to social media, the place where everyone shares onyly their successes and we are not able to imagine the path that led to it. We do very often see just the final result and that is making us less confident. It often seems like the success should come naturally without any extra work. And that’s such a toxic mindset and total crap. You’ve got a huge potential, compare yourself only to yourself and try to become the best version of yourself you can. That is the best goal you can set for yourself. You’ll gain an immense amount of confidence owing to the fact that you’ll realize you are the one in charge of your own progress. You are 100% able to grow every day. It’s up to you, my friend.
“To enjoy life, you don’t need fancy nonsense, but you do need to control your time and realize that most things just aren’t as serious as you make them out to be.”
That is absolutely true. Try to think of your real needs. You will realize what is actually important and what is not, sooner or later. Guess what, a vast majority of things you think is serious has actually nothing to do with the happiness you want to feel. The happiness comes from the inside, not the outside. Possessing things won’t make you happy in the long run. Instead, try to focus on your relationships, invest in yourself and take risks. Love your days, that is all you’ve got.
“Focus on being productive instead of being busy.”
Everyone can be busy today. And it seems to me that everyone kind of wants to be busy. Everybody wants to feel busy while it looks like a hard working process. It must be good, right? NO, absolutely not. Don’t overwhelm yourself with the “work”. Try to become genuinely productive instead. Productivity does not necessarily mean doing more in less time. Productivity is rather doing precisely just the things you have to do in order to succeed in the shortest period of time possible. If you can work two hours a day and do at least the same amount of work as somebody else does in 8 hours, then the real fun begins. Don’t take things as they are just because it works like that. Don’t try to follow the masses, otherwise, you’ll end up where they are.
“Information is useless if it is not applied to something important or if you will forget it before you have a chance to apply it.”
The process of learning is an active process. Reading something not using it at all won’t make you learn something. Try to apply whatever you acknowledge, otherwise, you waste your precious time. You don’t want to waste your time, do you?
“$1,000,000 in the bank isn’t the fantasy. The fantasy is the lifestyle of complete freedom it supposedly allows.”
The money is nice, however, if you still chase more, you will never become happy. Escape your rat race as soon as possible. According to Tim, the new rich people aren’t the ones who work all day long to secure themselves unbelievably huge amounts of cash on their accounts. The new rich can be anyone who is willing to adjust his mindset and the most importantly to redesign his values. The new rich people prefer personal freedom instead of money. The time you’ve got, the independence in the place from which you work or live and the opportunity to make little retirements throughout your life, those are the real measurements of your wealth. Why would you want to work until 65 hoping to discover the world one day?
“By working only when you are most effective, life is both more productive and more enjoyable. It’s the perfect example of having your cake and eating it, too.”
Your ultimate goal in life should be your lifestyle. Because if you want to live happily, you have to adjust your lifestyle in order to be happy. You can be happy every single day, there is no real reason for an opposite. It’s only up to you, my friend. Maybe your work doesn’t exist yet, create it and love what you do. Love your life and enjoy your time. You don’t have to become a corporate slave and work for someone else’s dreams.
“It’s lonely at the top. Ninety-nine percent of people in the world are convinced they are incapable of achieving great things, so they aim for the mediocre. The level of competition is thus fiercest for ‘realistic’ goals, paradoxically making them the most time and energy-consuming.”
Imagine your goals as a huge mountain, say Mount Everest. It’s really high, you are at the start of a very long journey and probably are going to be alone after taking a couple of bigger steps. That’s the deal of the champions. There’s never a traffic jam on the extra mile, be aware of that. You can become an exception quite easily. The question is, are you willing to sacrifice something?
“Pareto’s Law can be summarized as follows: 80% of the outputs result from 20% of the inputs.”
We’ve got a great post about this one. The rule 80/20 is possible to apply anywhere, so the versatility of this statement is unbelievable. Take advantage from knowing that by adjusting what you do according to the scheme. You’ll gain huge power!
